A double rainbow -- and a honey eater! You had to be there for the moment...

A New Holland honey eater among plum blossom, against a rainbow. Perfect!
Photographers travel the world and hike miles to get pictures -- I've done it myself. But sometimes, if you're quick enough, the pictures literally come to your own backdoor. Like this.

There'd been a "sun shower" just as the sun was getting low, so the eastern sky was darker, almost on the line where blue becomes mauve, and colors brighten with red and gold tones. A brilliant double rainbow sprang up in the northeast...

Looking east from the backyard...

...and as I shot the image right above, I noticed a New Holland honey eater was in the top of the tree, where the plum blossom is just starting to pop. You can juuust see him in the image at this size; much clearer if you view it large (these were uploaded BIG, so -- enjoy). I was standing under the eaves at the back of the house, about ten yards from the door, so ... let's shoot 20 frames, and see if we can capture digitally what the human eye sees. And here it is:

The moment was magical ... and I do love my Fuji HS50. These are tiny little birds, and they rarely sit still. It's very difficult to get an image at all, much less pretty darned good ones.

Neat!

    1. Yeah -- 97% luck, 1% having the right camera for the job, 1% having the "eye" to SEE the images I was chasing ... 1% skill, LOL. Marvelous being there to get the shots, because to the naked eye the bird was a tiny dot. You don't actually see him (her?) till you open the images. Thanks, Mike.
